Why does Residency ask for Always location?
So it can count your days in each state even when the app is not open. It keeps only the state, never addresses, and your location is never sent to the developer. The app also works without it: you can enter days by hand.
Does Residency track where I go?
It records which state or country you are in, not where you are. The app works out the state from your location, then keeps only the state, the time and a location rounded to about 7 miles. There are no addresses and no map. You can correct any day, and corrected days are labelled as your entry in reports.
Why is background tracking not working?
Background tracking needs two things. In iPhone Settings, Residency, Location, choose Always. In Settings, General, Background App Refresh, make sure it is on for Residency. Low Power Mode can also pause background activity.
How do I back up and restore my data?
Use the backup options in the app's settings to save a backup file to Files or iCloud Drive. To restore, choose the restore option and pick that file. Your data is also part of your normal iPhone backup.
What happens when the free trial ends?
Residency stops recording: location tracking, background updates, TripIt refreshes and notifications all turn off, and the app shows a screen where you can subscribe, buy Lifetime, restore a purchase or export what it recorded as a PDF. Your records stay on your iPhone. When you subscribe, Residency starts recording again. The days it was off stay unknown until you add them yourself, by hand or with TripIt. It does not guess.
How does Family Sharing work?
Premium supports Family Sharing. When the family organizer buys it, family members can use it on their own iPhones using the same Apple purchase. Each person's travel data stays on their own phone.
How do I restore my purchase?
Open the Premium screen in the app and tap Restore Purchases. You need to be signed in with the Apple ID that made the purchase, or be in the family that shares it.
How do I cancel my subscription?
On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Residency and tap Cancel Subscription. Cancel at least a day before the renewal date to avoid being charged for the next period.
Is this tax advice?
No. Residency helps you keep records. It is not tax or legal advice. Rules differ by state and by situation, so check with a qualified tax professional.
